Grooming a Golden With Rebecca
Grooming a golden retriever is a lot of fun because they are such good dogs.
The tools I need:
Slicker brush
Comb
Deshedding tool such as furminator
Clipper that is in good shape
#10 blade for the sanitary clip
#40 blade for hair under the paws
Pair of sharpened shears.
Dematting tool for tangles and matts
Undercoat Rake
Happy mindset and positive vibes
After I have all of my equipment I will use my grooming table. At home you might not have a grooming table handy, but that's okay! Goldens are so good you can groom them right on the floor!
I would first take my slicker brush and go over his coat to make sure there is no matting.
If there is matting, you may need a dematting tool and comb or even a clipper with a #10 bkade to clip the matts . out.
Goldens have very thick hair and a double coat.
I would avoid shaving the whole dog because it can damage the coat. However, i do recommend a shave down if he has skin problems like hot spots or if it is vet recommended.
After dematting with the dematting tool, combing to make sure there are no matts, and brushing over the surface wth a slicker brush the golden is ready for a bath!
Bathtime items to use:
Furminator brand Shampoo and Conditioner(recommended) or an oatmeal shampoo.
rubber curry brush
toothpaste made for dogs
Hoodie for the head
Blow dryer with heat
For bathtime I scrub the golden with a rubber curry and brush teeth while the conditioner soaks. I would wash twice because they can get very dirty and hide dirt in that thick coat!
Goldens need their teeth brushed ideally on a daily basis, but if you can brush the teeth during bathtime at least, it is definitely worth it.
A hoodie can be purchased on amason, it is a hood that you place around the head. This keeps the water out of the ears as godlens are prone to get ear infections. It also helps calm the nervous golden retriever by removing all of the loudness of the water and blow dryer, A hood is not something you have to have , however it is highly reccommended
! The water should be warm to the touch. Try testing the temperature on your wrist for accurate feeling of the correct temperature. Or bathe a golden outside if it's warm enough. They love to be outside in general.
Then I blow dry as much as I can, avoiding blowing the air directly in the ears. Keep that hoodie up during this process!
Let him air dry or if he's almost dry start to brush with slicker and comb. Get that undercoat out with furminator or undercoat rake. I would do this step outside or in an area in the house that is easy to clean. Prepare to have hair flying everywhere!
Make sure you brush enough to have all of those loose hairs gone and that you can take a comb all the way through every strand without getting stuck.
Then I clip the nails with a basic nail clippers. Avoid guilitein as they do not work the greatest on larger breeds.
After this i would clean the ears with a good dog ear cleaner. Place a couple of drops on a few cotton balls and clean out the ears thoroughly because like i said they are prone to those ear infections!
Then bring out the #10 for the sanitary clip.
and do my Scissor finish just cleaning up the feathering of the dog. Neaten all over with my sharp shears.
At the end Spray with Fresh N Clean doggie cologne. I like this brand because the smell is not overwhelming like some colognes.
Tie a bandana around his neck. Goldens look especiallyu great with bandanas on!
Then take a second look at your work. Admire your beautifyul or handsome golden. Take pictures of the after, and let him go. you are done.
Well that is how I would groom a golde
n at home. Hope you learned a little something my golden owners. I am partial to goldens because of course I have my golden retriever JB. They have always been in my family since I was young. They are so loving and friendly . If you are thinking about a dog breed to get, think no more! Golden retriever is the perfect breed. If you have a golden, take a PAWS and give him a big hug for me!
Love and kisses,š
Rebecca
